Pre-Employment Background Checks

Is Pre-Employment Verification for You & Your Business?

“In God We Trust, Everyone Else We Verify!”

A Bluffton small business owner once said to me, “No deal is better than a bad deal!” This statement has much credence, and it also applies to employees. Think about it, “No employee is better than a bad employee.”

Small business owners can’t absorb a loss in profit the way big business can. A loss of $10,000 by small business is major and could devastate it, while to big business it may seem a mere hiccup.

ACE Interpretations, LLC, recently provided a small business owner with a pre-employment background check on someone under consideration as a new hire. The individual stated on his/her employment application that he/she had a criminal history and reported that he/she had been arrested, tried and convicted for domestic violence. This was the truth, but not all of the truth. The individual also had a record for burglary, armed assault, and a host of other records. In short, this person was attempting to land a job with a small business owner and that new employee would have been that company’s representative inside homes of the company’s clients and customers! Furthermore, that individual would have handled hundreds, and very possibly thousands of dollars for that small company. The small business owner did not hire the individual because it was too risky.

A recent incident occurred when a Florida limousine driver was driving drunk while driving 8 prom-bound students passengers. The students made a cell call home and reported the driver to their parents who in turn notified the police. The prom experience was interrupted and ruined for those students, and they were also put a great bodily risk. The small business owner would most likely get sued, as is the right of the students and their parents. The small business owner of the limousine company would have come up with a long list of DUI violations on that driver had a proper background check been made. Rather than paying for the pre-employment check, that owner will suffer a greater loss and possibly the loss of his company.

According to a Journal-Gazette page C1 business article “Don’t expect truth in resumes,” of March 6, 2006, Carnegie Mellon University Associate Professor Don Moore, in part stated that, “People at all levels of our society do things they hope will advance their cause, get them the things they want, the job they want, get people to like them, get them more money.”
